Critique: Trying to keep up

Next week is not looking pretty for me. I have a 8-page feature spread rough draft due next Tuesday and the capstone project prototypes are also due next week. I have an extremely busy weekend ahead of me, but this week was, of course, really slow.

To keep myself busy, I caught up on some design work I am doing for my internship at Hot Box Cookies (and yes, I get free cookies). They are now serving Tiger Stripe Ice Cream to adorn their delicious ice-cream cookie sandwiches. By the way, did you know that ice-cream is hyphenated when used as an adjective? Crazy. Thank you magazine editing. So, here's the semi-finalized ad I designed for Hot Box:

I was pleased with the ad concept and design I had come up with so far, but I think there may be a few elements that could be perfected. The one thing that really sticks out to me is the separation that seems to arise between the contact information elements and the big ad with the tiger. I liked having the little symbols to correspond with the contact info, but I want to find a way to make them more cohesive with the larger ad. Then again, maybe ads aren't supposed to be like that? I haven't done much ad designing, but I kind of like it. It was fun and playful. Especially for Hot Box, it's easy to be creative when working on their designs because their business style is relaxed and more playful. Any ideas, let me know!

  1. Sweet internship! Having some professional work in your portfolio will be really beneficial. I like the graphics of the car and the phone. Doing work on your own is great because you get the chance work with clients in a way that allows you to utilize your skills in a way that communicates their message. On weeks when I'm not designing for VOX I plan to work on some stuff to help promote my boyfriend's band.

  2. I really like the design you created for the ad. Ad concepts and design is totally different from mag design I would think, and you did a great job incorporating what you know to make an ad.

  3. I am so incredibly jealous of you. I saw that internship posted and really, really wanted to apply, but I knew there was no way I could find time for it in my schedule this semester. It seems like a really fun business to work for. I like the ad you came up with. Something I'm curious about is how they have copyright access to things like Truman the Tiger?

  4. After talking to you Thursday about ideas I can't wait to see what you've come up with since...so you most post the finalized ad once you've completed it! As for the lull this week -- I find it crazy how we will all go through such a roller coaster this semester.

Also -- last semester I found the same fascination the fact that ice-cream is hyphenated when used as an adjective!! She'll teach you plenty of those little tricks all semester!

  5. What a fun internship! It'll be great for you to get additional experience outside capstone.

I think you've got a fun, distinct visual style started here. Based on Haleigh's comment, I'm sure you've revised since you posted, but one thing I might consider is limiting the number of typefaces you use. I think the fun comic book-y look you've got going is working well, but the "Tiger Stripe Ice Cream" stands out a little bit to me right now. I can't wait to see more of your work for Hot Box this semester!

  6. I like the icons, especially for an ad where people will be looking for that information. You probably have already finalized the ad by now, but I would think about keeping the ice cream stacks the color of tiger strip ice cream. Right now it kind of looks like sorbet. Other than that, great job!
